How far do renters move?

26% of tenants moved within a mile of their previous rental property in 2020, and over two thirds stayed within ten miles.

As renting is more flexible than ownership, some households use it as an opportunity to get to know a new area. In fact, 27% of tenants moved more than 10 miles in 2020.

The number of tenants moving more than 10 miles reduced by 6% in 2020 compared to 2019, perhaps reflecting a preference to stay close to friends, families and established neighbours during the pandemic.

5% of tenants in England and Wales moved from overseas. London is the most popular region, with 10% moving from overseas in 2020.
